Finding Balance Ontario Campaign 2014

About every 10 minutes in Ontario, at least one older adult (those over 65 years of age) visits an emergency department due to a fall.  In fact, falls are the leading cause of injury among older adults.  Falls have a significant impact on individuals, their families and the health care system.

Although these facts are scary, the good news is you can take steps to prevent a fall:

Watch your step wherever you are.
Speak up about dizziness. Tell your doctor if you often feel dizzy or lightheaded.
Keep active and exercise to maintain strength and balance.  Aim to be physically active for a total of 30 to 60 minutes on most days.
Check your medications. Discuss your medication & supplements with your doctor or pharmacist.

The Finding Balance campaign started in Alberta where it was originally developed at the University of Alberta’s School of Public Health, but has been adapted for use in Ontario. Finding Balance Ontario is guided by an Advisory Committee of health care professionals from all over Southwestern Ontario.

Finding Balance is aimed at helping seniors stay active and independent. Stay tuned for more information about this exciting campaign!
